As a former Plant.ID PhD fellow, I am developing a computer vision classifier to identify ebony wood samples that are used in musical instruments, especially violin and cello. I am mostly focusing on Malagasy ebony (Diospyros). Since these species are nowadays highly endangered, their trade is only permitted with CITES-permits. By doing this research, I help retailers and importers to avoid trading illegal wood and musicians to play on instruments made from sustainably logged trees.
