Als paleolithisch archeoloog bestudeer ik het gedrag van vroege mensachtigen zoals Homo erectus en de Neanderthaler. Naast hun fossielen blijven ook materiële resten bewaard die iets kunnen vertellen over hun gedrag: de werktuigen die ze gebruikten om klusjes te klaren, de resten van hun maaltijden en in sommige gevallen ook vondsten die duiden op sociaal en symbolisch gedrag. Ik ben gespecialiseerd in het analyseren van stenen werktuigen, maar bestudeer archeologische vindplaatsen vanuit een contextueel perspectief: hoe verhouden de vondsten zich tot elkaar en tot de geologische lagen waarin ze bewaard zijn gebleven?

Evolutie en gedrag van vroege mensachtigen in Pleistoceen Zuidoost Azië

Eind 19e eeuw vond Eugène Dubois nabij Trinil (Indonesië) de eerste resten van de vroege mensensoort Homo erectus. In 2018 en 2019 hebben we nieuw veldwerk uitgevoerd op deze vindplaats, waarmee we een aantal langlopende vraagstukken hebben weten op te lossen (SHeLL project). Interessant is dat zowel bij Trinil als bij andere vindplaatsen met Homo erectus geen stenen werktuigen zijn gevonden, terwijl dit wel het geval is in Afrika en continentaal Eurazië. De voorlopige resultaten van veldonderzoek in Midden-Pleistocene meer-afzettingen in Oost-Java suggereren dat we tot nu toe op de verkeerde plekken hebben gezocht. In een vervolgonderzoek, het BASINS project, onderzoeken we door middel van opgravingen en veldverkenningen de potentiële rijkdom van dit archeologische bodemarchief.
