Ik ben zeer geïnteresseerd in het bestuderen van de plantendiversiteit en de mechanismen welke deze diversiteit generen en reguleren op zowel lokale als regionale schaal, in het bijzonder van het Amazoneregenwoud. Ik heb een groot netwerk opgebouwd van samenwerkende collega’s binnen en buiten de Amazone: het ‘Amazon Tree Diversity Network’ (ATDN; het Amazonebomen-diversiteitsnetwerk). Binnen dit netwerk bestuderen we de patronen en processen binnen de soortensamenstelling, de patronen van het relatieve voorkomen van soorten en het functionele gedrag en de evolutie van het Amazonewoud.

De nadruk van mijn onderzoek ligt op het begrijpen van de oorsprong en regulatie van biodiversiteit.
Ik werk voornamelijk binnen het framework van het Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ATDN). Ik ben in het bijzonder geïnteresseerd in de oorzaken van alfa- en betadiversiteit bij bomen. Hoewel bomen mijn persoonlijke lievelingsplanten zijn werk ik ook met herbariummateriaal, bryofyten en vasculaire epifyten.
